Hyrox Sydney Recap
We were told the highly anticipated Hyrox Sydney event would be bigger and better than last year’s, and boy - did they deliver.
More than 5,000 athletes made their way to the iconic Sydney Olympic Park on Saturday, 27 July to compete in the second Hyrox event Down Under for the 2024-2025 season. This was more than triple the number of athletes that competed in the first Hyrox Sydney event in August 2023.
Let’s take a look at some competitor stats!
Hyrox Sydney Finished Competitors
The above graph shows the significant increase in competitors for each race division between 2023 and 2024, noting that the doubles events included the pro categories this year. Each race division appeared to at least double in size, if not triple! It was great to see close to 130 men compete in the Men’s Pro wave this year, compared to only 72 in 2023. Similar to the recent Hyrox Melbourne event, the Women’s Open Doubles was the most popular event on the day, with more than 1,000 athletes taking to the course. This compared to only 232 athletes the previous year - an increase of more than 385 per cent!
There were some brilliant results in each race, including three athletes breaking the one hour time in the Men’s Open event.
Ed Womersley (Australia) - 56:51
Tommy Allot (United Kingdom) - 59:40
Ryan Jenkins (Australia) - 59:47
It came as no surprise to see our beloved coach and Elite 15 athlete, James Kelly (better known as JK Hybrid), take out the Men’s Pro race with a time of 57:43. JK crushed the course and beat his competitors by more than two minutes, with Tom Rodgers finishing in second place with a time of 1:00:16. Interestingly, the time difference between second and tenth place in the Men’s Pro race was less than three minutes.
Take a look at the graph below that shows the tight finish.
Men's Pro Race
One of the most notable performers on the day was Joanna Wietrzyk who won the Women’s Pro race in a time of 1:05:07. Joanna recently won the Women’s Open race at the Hyrox Melbourne event in a time of 1:00:30. She also competed in the Women’s Relay at Hyrox Sydney where her team smashed the world record in 53:58 - an incredible relay time! We’ve heard Joanna is gearing up for another stellar performance in Hyrox Brisbane…
