Hyrox Brisbane Recap
We’re calling it here first…Hyrox Brisbane was the best hybrid event in the APAC region to date! There were a few familiar names on the leaderboard, as well as some up and coming newbies, and we’re here to break it all down for you.
More than 5,000 athletes competed at the first ever Hyrox Brisbane event on Saturday, 17 August. Held at the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, this marked the third Hyrox event in Australia for the 24-25 season.
Starting with the Women’s Pro race, we witnessed our Australian rising star Joanna Wietrzyk take out first place with a finishing time of 1:00:52. Joanna’s result has secured her a place in the Elite 15 series qualification for the upcoming major in Amsterdam, ranking in at 8th in the world for the women. Her 1:00:52 time was an improvement of more than four minutes since her last Pro race at Hyrox Sydney just three weeks prior where she won in a time of 1:05:07. Absolutely amazing progression in just three weeks! Joanna said working with JK Hybrid Coaching these last few weeks has already changed not only her performance, but her mindset.
“I came from a tennis background so completely different training now,” Joanna said.
“Now I’m actually training for the Hyrox sport…only two weeks of doing that and already I’ve got a better mindset and know what I’m going into.”
“I feel primed and ready to go now. I can’t wait for more races to come.”
Joanna finished 23 seconds in front of Elite 15 athlete Lauren Griffith from the USA. Lauren travelled to Australia for the race after placing 12th in the 23-24 Hyrox World Championships in Nice. This just shows the amazing performance by our Aussie superstar Joanna Wietrzyk! We can’t wait to see her perform at the Amsterdam Major in October.
Moving onto the Men’s Pro race, no one was surprised to see James Kelly take out yet another first place position. JK finished in a time of 55:40 - more than two minutes faster than his Sydney time from three weeks prior and only 1:37 behind his personal best of 54:03. Following closely behind him was Tom Rodgers who has proven to be another rising star in the Men’s Pro field. Tom finished in 58:18 - a personal best by almost two minutes for his Hyrox 24-25 season. Coming from a triathlon background, Tom said it has definitely helped him with his Hyrox training.
“I think it’s just been a slow progression the last 12 months, working on my running a bit more and I’ve got a strength coach now,” Tom said.
“I think just knowing how to train a lot helps and running on fatigue. It’s just getting stronger.”
Other notable performances on the day included:
Men’s Pro Third Place - Dexter Buchanan (NZL) @ 1:00:50
Women’s Pro Doubles Winners - Sarah Carter (AUS) & Amy Carter (AUS) @ 1:03:35
